Rendering Scene and Viewer lighting

The scene chooser lighting seems to have a more "intense" lighting behavior than the "Viewer" shows after rendering. That is the rendered images seem consistently darker than one would predict from the scene panel. The details of exactly why this is escape me.
The figures shows the rendered output on the rendered output for coldlights, default, and warmlights (against 2 different backgrounds to minimize perceptual artifacts; done post MH capture); the second row shows the same images as they appear in the Scene preview window.
Are there different lights during "scene" and "render"?
